The leathergrau

People used many materials in the course of the history. Most of these substances get shabby with the time and rips, dents, get scratches, used up. You rust, burst or break. Good leather doesn't get just older, old leather becomes more beautiful: by an incomparable patina which would never produced artificially have for itself. A faultless raw material and a perfect processing are "in beauty age" prerequisite for it. The quality of the leather starts at a considerate keeping of animals on the pasture. Injuries, deep rips of thorns, brand or cuts make the skin of a cattle useless for a leather manufacturer like Oehler. Certainly, also today, the furs are carefully examined in hand of young cattle from Argentina or calves from France in front of the tannery. Some customers from the shoe industry already come in this stage to Marbach to choose their raw material.

The first customers who came to the tanner hut of Christian David Oehler weren't quite so demanding. Also to the work the craftsmen so carefully went in the last century: The result when tanning manually could be never foreseen one hundred per cent and depended on the fate of the tanners strongly.

On the other hand, the modern tannery leaves nothing to chance. Despite the high share in real work done by hand highly developed methods provide perfect control of the individual work steps: of moving and color and dry columns, decalcify and corrosive fluids up to making a mess, fulling machines, folds, limely. Being able to measure more mechanically resistance, wear and tear, lightfastness of the colors, liquid photo and breathing ability in the laboratory. Although the leather tanned ready is taken up to the last detail under the magnifying glass before the delivery, character as a natural product doesn't his let ruin it to itself through this.
